Navigating COVID guilt…

What does mom guilt and COVID guilt have in common?

Both being a mom and navigating COVID can make you feel as though no matter what you do, it’s not the right thing. If you stay inside too much, you worry about whether your kids are getting enough socialization, exercise, or screen-free time. If you go out for a social distanced get together with neighbors, head to the beacn, or maybe even just go for a walk, you worry that you did too much and could have potentially exposed yourself or you family. It’s exhausting. It’s anxiety provoking. It’s unclear.

The truth is, just like in motherhood, everybody has a different comfort level when it comes to COVID...and it shifts and moves as the conditions change.

Most of us are on the same page when it comes to wearing a mask in public-at this point, it seems as necessary as wearing a seat belt in a car, or strapping your child into their car seat properly.

But when it comes to most everything else COVID-related, remember that it’s all new territory; we’ve never been here before so it’s okay to feel lost and uncertain-in fact, you wouldn’t be human if you didn’t.

Whether it comes to motherhood or COVID, our “monkey brains” don’t like situations that don’t have clear cut boundaries or rules. This is why so many are suffering from heightened levels of anxiety, depression, mental tiredness, and overwhelm. All we can do is our best, until we know better… and then we do better. Moment by moment and day by day.

So, once again, I find myself wanting to share the message with my clients, with you, and with mysely; when it comes to all new and evolving things ...grace, grace, grace.
